Is Jesus God?

1h 21m

Both sides of this fight agree on what "God" means. The Bible doesn't. The words are elohim and theos, a kind of being. Jesus is that kind because He is the Son of the Most High, and He is not the Most High.

Summary

Two Christians sit at a table. One says Jesus is the very God. The other says only the Father is God. They share one definition of the English word. The Bible's words are elohim and theos, and neither one is the name of a single being.

Israel tells the orange story he used on the altar-call team. The word meant one piece of fruit, then it meant the kind of fruit, and he didn't notice. "God" gets used the same way. "Jesus is God" can mean He is the one supreme being, or it can mean He is the same kind as His Father.

Psalm 82 calls a council elohim and children of the Most High, and Jesus quotes it when they pick up stones. He doesn't say "I am the Father." He says "I am the Son of theos." Deuteronomy 32 has the Most High hand Jacob to Yhwh. John 1:1 says the Word was with the theos, and the Word was theos. He has a beginning and a Father, and He still has a theos after He rises.

Each person at the table is half right, and each has verses the other definition cannot use. Read theos as a kind of being and every one of those verses stays. Before the councils ruled it out, Christian writers called the Son a second god. Neither person has to give up a verse. They were holding the wrong definition.
