Jesus

In the beginning was the logos

1h 56m

John 1:1 says the logos was with theos and the logos was theos. If you read that through the Trinity it becomes a mystery, and the talk reads it instead as the Father's message among the Elohim, the message who is Jesus.

Summary

John 1:1 says the logos already existed, the logos was with theos, and the logos was theos. The English line, the word was with God and the word was God, sounds like the Trinity, which the talk calls a mystery made up later. Theos does not name one person by itself: ho theos points to a particular god in the writer's mind, and the second theos does not. The Jehovah's Witnesses add the article a, which the talk calls the wrong translation, while still taking the logos as one of the Elohim.

John is opening on Genesis 1, so theos there is Elohim, a word that can name the Most High or a ruler given a people, which is why Moses can be called an Elohim. Let us make humankind in our image is a father speaking to sons. Deuteronomy 32:8–9, supported by the Dead Sea Scrolls against the later Hebrew, has the Most High dividing the nations and Yhwh receiving Jacob.

Logos is the whole of what someone is saying. Jesus uses it that way in John 14:24, while Greek metaphysicians narrowed it to a single word. The talk reads Jesus as the message itself, which is how it takes I and the Father are one in John 10:30. The verse says the message was there from the beginning and shares the Father's standing, and it says nothing about a triune god.
