The divine council

Elyon gave Jacob to Yhwh

Deuteronomy 32:7-9 says the Most High divided the nations and gave Jacob to Yhwh. A Dead Sea Scroll reads sons of God, the later Hebrew reads sons of Israel, and a NET footnote says the older line is the original.

Summary

A NET footnote on Deuteronomy 32 records three wordings. A Qumran fragment has sons of God, the Masoretic text has sons of Israel, and the Septuagint has angels of God, with older Greek copies closer to sons of God and later copies saying angels. The note says sons of God is undoubtedly the original, and that the Masoretic text and the Septuagint each interpreted the line.

Verse 7 tells the hearer to ask his father and the elders, because the next lines were common knowledge. With sons of God restored, the Most High gives the nations their inheritance, and verse 9 says Yhwh's allotment is his people, Jacob his special possession. The Masoretic text also drops a later line in the chapter that tells the heavens to rejoice and all the Elohim to bow. Michael Heiser, cited in that NET note, says two accidents in the same chapter, both removing heavenly beings, strains credulity, and Daniel McClellan writes that the earlier text distinguishes the high deity from Yhwh.

The older reading came out of a cave in 1947, and it is in that footnote. In John 8 the leaders say their God, and Jesus says they do not know Him, after calling Yhwh a lying murderer from the beginning. They know Yhwh and do not know His Father. Yhwh is one of the sons receiving an allotment, not the divider, and the text was changed so that would stay hidden.
