Elohim is Not a Name

1h 34m

Elohim is the word behind God in your Old Testament, and it never belonged to one being. Jesus answers a blasphemy charge by quoting the line, you are gods.

Coming up next Jesus answers the blasphemy charge from Psalm 82

Summary

In winter, Jesus is walking in the temple when the men around Him pick up stones. He asks why calling Himself the Son of God is blasphemy, and He quotes Psalm 82:6, I said you are Elohim. John uses theos for that Hebrew word. The reply works because the word can name more than one person, the way king can.

English puts a capital G on the word, so the verse is already decided before you read it. The same word is used for the Sidonian goddess, the Moabite god, and the Ammonite god. Exodus 7:1 and Exodus 4:16 give Moses the class title Elohim toward Pharaoh and toward Aaron, and the talk says the translation adds like and as if. A nearer English picture is an executive in a company, or a lord in a royal house, not a private name.

The line Elohim of the Elohim gives the first occurrence a capital G and not the second. A claim to be God does not make Yhwh God, and Jesus says to judge by fruit, because a good tree does not bear bad fruit. Genesis 1 has Elohim create, then say let us make humankind in our image, then act in the singular, and Yhwh's name is not in that chapter. Elohim tells you the kind of being, the name tells you who, and Jesus stands on the plural as His defense.
