Surviving the Exodus

1h 50m

You have heard the Exodus as a rescue. The talk follows a family from the bricks and the doorway through a wilderness that kills the men counted at Sinai, and then sets Jesus' bread beside that story.

Summary

You are put in a doorway in Goshen at night, with the family behind you. The slavery was already scheduled, Pharaoh has the newborn boys thrown in the river, and Abraham was told the oppression would last 400 years. Moses' message makes them stink to Pharaoh before they leave. On that night Yhwh attacks the firstborn, the blood is the sign for the houses, and at the sea they ask if there were no graves in Egypt.

At the mountain, a person or an animal who comes too close must not live, and after the calf each man is told to kill his brother, his friend, and his neighbor, about 3,000 of them. Complaint brings fire at the edge of the camp, and quail until the meat makes them sick. The oath that this generation would receive the land is replaced by an oath that they will not enter, the children wander 40 years, and of 603,550 non-Levite men only Caleb and Joshua remain, about 43 and a half deaths a day for 38 years. Psalm 95 says Yhwh was disgusted with that generation for 40 years, which is the promise he kept.

Jesus feeds hungry people in an empty place because He has compassion, and nobody dies with food still in their mouths. In John 6 He stops saying our ancestors and says your ancestors ate the manna and died, while His Father gives the true bread from heaven. He asks what father gives his son a snake for a fish or a scorpion for an egg, and Deuteronomy 8 names snakes and scorpions in that wilderness. On oaths, Jesus says that anything more comes from the evil one, and the talk calls Yhwh an oath breaker who is not the Father.
