Jesus
John 8:54 - is Jesus saying their god is His God?
If you quote John 8:54 as proof that Jesus' Father is the god the crowd served, the talk says you have stopped at the comma. The next words call that claim a lie.
Coming up next The dialogue sets the crowd's theos against Jesus' Father
Summary
The objection is new. It says Jesus calls His Father the one you say is your god, so the two are the same being. The talk says that only works if you stop mid-sentence. The argument runs from John 8:12 to John 8:59, and verse 54 quotes the claim they made in verse 41, then says they have never known the Father.
You say reports their words and does not agree with them. My Father glorifies me and he is our god are two claims, and the second is the one Jesus refuses, adding that denying the Father would make Him a liar like them. Bengel, Meyer, Chrysostom, Calvin, Aquinas, and Cyril read the sentence as that kind of refutation, without agreeing on who Yhwh is. The same-god use of John 8:54 is absent from the creeds and the confessions, and from the older proof-text lists.
The pronouns stay split: my Father, your god, and never ours. Hosea has the people saying we have known you, and Jesus uses the same kind of wording to say this crowd has not known the Father. They are still in Yhwh's temple, keeping his law, and He still says they never knew the Father, so the lie is the conflation. The close sets that beside deliver us from the evil one, and beside the Most High giving Yhwh the Hebrews as his portion.
