A BibleZip update comes first, then four lines you may have heard quoted as if one verse could settle the question. John 8:54, John 4:24, Genesis 1:26–27, and the kingdom saying each get the surrounding context put back.

Coming up next John 8:54 quotes the crowd's claim and then refuses that claim

Summary

The opening is a BibleZip update: audio with a speed ramp, text that can follow along, and a small set of Hebrew and Greek words left as themselves, including logos and theos. He hopes the New Testament translation is done by the end of the year and the Old Testament by the end of the next. One verse is not allowed to wipe out a whole discourse.

On John 8:54, the isolated line sounds like the one who glorifies me is your theos. The sentence quotes their earlier claim, we have one father, and the next words are that they have never known the Father, then that Jesus would be a liar like them if He denied the Father. That is called the reverse of the apologetic reading: Yhwh is not the Father of Jesus. Verse numbers are a later addition, and stopping at one of them cuts Jesus off, the same habit as quoting 2 Chronicles 7:14 without verse 13.

John 4:24 answers where to worship. The Greek does not say a spirit, and the point is that the Father is not confined to Gerizim, to Jerusalem, or to priests, unlike Yhwh. Genesis 1:26–27 is a council saying let us, with the Father commanding and Jesus doing the making, and Genesis 18 shows Yhwh as a man who ate. Luke 17, spoken to hostile Pharisees, announces the Father's Kingdom breaking into the kingdom Yhwh runs.
